Happy Streets

Dear Friends from Pimple Saudagar,

All residential neighbourhoods deserve excellent and safe facilities for Walking, Cycling and Public Transport and pleasant, interesting streets as public spaces. Traditional road design in Indian cities focuses only on movement of motorized vehicles and ignores the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, users of public transport, physically handicapped. However, road design that recognizes streets as public spaces, for controlled vending, for a leisurely stroll, for meeting friends as well as catering to mobility needs need not be a distant dream. Pimple Saudagar as a newly developing area has the opportunity to ensure that the infrastructure being developed is in line with such needs. As citizens, we can work with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to ensure this.
Introducing 'Happy Streets'

The Pimpri Chinchwad Citizens’ Forum (PCCF), Centre for Environment Education (CEE), IBI Group and Institute for Transportation Policy Development (ITDP) are promoting socially and environment-friendly transportation in Pimpri Chinchwad.

As a part of our efforts, we propose to organize ‘Happy Streets’ - public street events that assert that road space is for everyone, not only cars and two-wheelers. And what better way to do this than to celebrate these ignored uses of road space in a fun-filled event!

‘Happy Streets’ events are proposed to be organized on Sundays in November and December 2014.

The idea is to cordon off a part of the main road in our area for a few hours on a Sunday evening, keep it off limits for motorized traffic, and just have fun there... The best part is, PCMC and Pune Traffic Police have shown willingness to support us if that’s what people want!

Seeking Support from Pimple Saudagar Citizens

We would like to explore the possibility of joining hands with citizens, schools, merchants/ shops, commercial establishments in Pimple Saudagar to arrange for Happy Streets events in your area.
